Singles Free Skating Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers singles free skating events for Limited Beginner through Senior levels.

All singles free skating events will be skated on full ice surface to the music of the skater's selection. Judging will be based on the 6.0 system for Limited Beginner through Pre-Juvenile and Adult Pre-Bronze through Silver. The International Judging System (IJS) will be used for Juvenile/Open Juvenile through Senior, short program and long program and Adult Gold through Masters Senior. Skaters may skate up one level but may not skate at more than one level.

Solo Dance Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers solo dance events for Preliminary through International levels.

All skaters must either compete at their test level or one level above of their highest completed dance test. The determination of level will be based upon test level at the entry deadline. The test level is determined by a skater completing all of the dance tests within that level.

The Grand Rapids Open is also part of the USFS National Solo Dance Series. This program began in the 2010-11 season and is open to individual skaters within the Eastern, Midwestern and Pacific Coast sections. Skaters participating in at least two competitions within their respective sections accumulate points based upon placement that will be used to determine qualification of individual skaters to the National Solo Dance Championships.

Compulsory Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers compulsory events for Limited Beginner through Pre-Juvenile levels.

Compulsory events will be skated on one-half (1/2) of the ice surface. Moves must be skated exactly as stated and may be skated in any order. There must be no change of foot between jumps in a combination jump. An axel is considered a single jump. If a program exceeds the time limit, that portion of the program will not be judged. All moves in all levels are to be connected in a free flowing presentation.

Jumps Only Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers jumps only events for Pre-Preliminary through Senior levels.

Pre-Preliminary through Pre-Juvenile will be skated on half-ice. All other levels will be skated on full ice. Jumps should be performed exactly as stated. Skaters will be given two opportunities to perform each jump and will be judged on the best one. In situations where the skater is given the choice of the jumps to be performed, the first attempt will determine the jumps to be judged and the skater will not be allowed to change jumps on the second attempt.

Spins Only Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers spins only events for Pre-Preliminary through Senior levels.

Spins may be joined with appropriate connecting moves and will be skated on one-half ice. There will be a one and a half minute time limit, and no music. Spins must be skated exactly as stated, but may be performed in any order.

Artistic Showcase Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers artistic showcase events for Beginner through Senior levels and Adults.

Showcase events are to be skated to music. Programs should be designed specifically to entertain and/or emotionally move the audience. Costumes are encouraged. Props will be allowed and the skater will have 30 seconds to place and remove the prop (no props are allowed on the ice during the warm-up). Test requirements for each showcase group are the same as the freestyle levels indicated. The program cannot exceed the indicated time.

Skaters placing fourth or higher in Preliminary and higher artistic showcase solo events, including Adult events, will be qualified to enter the next USFS National Showcase.

Basic Skills Element Events

The Grand Rapids Open offers Basic Skills element events for Snowplow Sam through Basic 8 levels.

Each skater will perform each element when directed by a judge or referee or have the option to perform one element at a time in the order listed in the competition announcement.

Basic Skills Program Events

The Grand Rapids open offers Basic Skills program events for Snowplow Sam through Basic 8 levels.

All Basic Skill program events will be skated on full ice surface to music of the skater's selection. The skater may use elements from a lower level but a .2 deduction will be taken for each element performed from a higher level.
